Endless Streams of Light.

Popular music has a Dionysian element of fervour and ecstasy inherent in every beat. Far from the often intellectual and “disinterested” modus of modern art, it is a piece of popular culture that speaks directly to our animal souls, making us want to move in rythm – with the music, with each other – turning us into something between a monstrous mob and a liberated pack of mammals, celebrating the joy of community and a transgression of the self. Sound too pretentious? That's probably what Radio 9 vocalist and front-man Leon Muraglia would say. Muraglia has a manifesto about joy and happiness supporting his output that aims at vindicating happiness and joy from the grip of insipid entertainment, as well as art from the grip of introspective brooding. Why is pop music considered less respectful of an art-form than the music of the likes of John Cage? Radio 9's debut album, titled “Endless Streams of Light”, tries to address this issue head on, making interesting, but happy music. My job was to capture some of this optimism as well as pay tribute to some great experimental animation from the likes of Len Lye and Norman McLaren. Meet the endless stream of Apollonian order – and give in to the frenzy.
